Armin van Buuren Stuns Fans with Drag Transformation as ‘Mystery Queen’ on Dutch TV
Armin van Buuren is known for his precision behind the decks and his "A State of Trance" brand, but his latest appearance saw him trading his usual DJ attire for a full drag transformation. The trance icon surprised audiences on the Dutch TV show Make Up Your Mind this past weekend, appearing as the "Mystery Queen."
The RTL4 program features celebrities undergoing professional drag makeovers to compete in front of a panel of judges. For van Buuren, the decision to participate went beyond the spectacle of the costume. It was a calculated move to champion inclusivity within the electronic music community.
A Message of Unity on the Dance Floor
Before his identity was revealed on screen, Armin shared a video message emphasizing the importance of safe spaces in nightlife. "I want to make a statement and invite everybody to party worldwide, but be who you want to be," he said. "Feel free, feel safe, and look after each other."
The electronic music scene has long been a sanctuary for self-expression, a sentiment the DJ echoed when discussing the performance later. He acknowledged that while drag and LGBTQ+ advocacy can sometimes be viewed as taboo in certain circles, he felt a responsibility to use his platform.
"For me, this wasn't just about dressing up or surprising people," Armin shared via Instagram. "It was about supporting something I genuinely believe in: everyone should feel safe to be themselves. Music and dance have always been about freedom, expression and bringing people together."
From TV Studios to Ibiza Residencies
The "Mystery Queen" appearance comes during an incredibly active period for the producer. Van Buuren is currently in the middle of a high-profile residency at [UNVRS] Ibiza, which runs through October 5th. Fans heading to the White Isle have been treated to a unique side of his artistry, as he has been performing weekly vinyl-only sets, reaching back to the roots of the trance genre.
Whether he is spinning classic wax in Ibiza or appearing in drag on national television, van Buuren seems focused on the human connection that defines the rave experience. His stint on Make Up Your Mind serves as a reminder that even the biggest names in the industry are looking out for the culture that built them.
