The History Behind Hulaween’s Five Stages: From A 1990s Amphitheater To An Underground Dance Floor

Five stages, decades of music history, and a festival that has continuously reinvented itself. Here's the story behind the stages of Hulaween 2026.

Suwannee Hulaween has become one of America's most distinctive music festivals, bringing together electronic music, jam bands, immersive art, and Halloween traditions in the forests of Florida. Since its first edition at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in 2013, the festival has continued to evolve, with each of its five stages representing a different chapter of that journey. Some were built long before Hulaween existed, while others emerged as the festival expanded.

THE MEADOW: WHERE HULAWEEN'S TRADITION LIVES

The Meadow is Hulaween's main stage and the heart of its biggest performances. It's especially connected to The String Cheese Incident, the band behind the festival's origins. Their Hulaween Halloween tradition dates back to 1996, nearly two decades before the event arrived at Suwannee in 2013. Over the years, The Meadow has hosted major headliners while remaining central to the festival's jam-band roots and musical identity.

THE HALLOWS: A STAGE BORN FROM THE FESTIVAL'S GROWTH

As Hulaween attracted larger crowds, its layout needed to evolve. In 2016, organizers introduced The Patch, an additional stage designed to accommodate the growing festival. After several years of changes and improvements, The Patch was replaced by The Hallows in 2021. Positioned across from The Meadow, the new stage helped create a more connected experience between two of the festival's biggest performance areas.

THE AMPHITHEATRE: OLDER THAN HULAWEEN ITSELF

One of Hulaween's most recognizable stages actually predates the festival by nearly two decades. Built between 1994 and 1995, The Amphitheatre was already part of Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park's live music history long before Hulaween arrived. Surrounded by towering trees and featuring a naturally sloped audience area, the venue has hosted generations of music fans. Today, its forest setting remains one of the most distinctive experiences at the festival.

SPIRIT LAKE: WHERE MUSIC MEETS AN IMMERSIVE ART WORLD

Spirit Lake has grown into one of Hulaween's defining attractions, combining music with large-scale art installations and interactive experiences. What began with illuminated trees and artistic displays evolved into a world of sculptures, fire effects, lasers, and projections across the water. A major audiovisual expansion in 2016 helped establish the area's modern identity. The Spirit Lake Stage brings live performances into this environment, making music part of a much larger visual experience.

DEF OFF LIMITS: HULAWEEN'S UNDERGROUND EVOLUTION

The newest chapter arrived in 2024, when Hulaween partnered with underground electronic music collective DEF to introduce OFF LIMITS. Built around a 360-degree DJ setup, the stage offered a more intimate, club-inspired environment where fans could surround the performers. With a focus on house, techno, and bass music, OFF LIMITS brought another dimension of electronic music culture to a festival already known for its musical diversity.

For Hulaween 2026, taking place October 22–25, all five stages return to Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. From an amphitheater built in the 1990s to an underground electronic stage introduced just two years ago, each space tells a different part of the festival's story. Together, they show how Hulaween has grown without losing the music, creativity, and sense of community that shaped its identity.
