Avi Sic Brings 20 Years Behind the Decks Into “Waves”
After more than two decades as a career DJ, Avi Sic has learned that music comes in cycles. Momentum, opportunities and inspiration all arrive in waves, an idea that became the foundation for “Waves,” released September 25. The self-released track brings the scale and energy she loved about peak-era EDM into the Bass House music she makes today. Avi calls her sound Hybrid House, and the record reflects that approach with a groovy house foundation, hypnotic hook and a harder melodic drop built to work in clubs and larger festival-style settings.
The production follows the same push and pull. Its opening sections remain stripped back before the drop expands with heavier bass, bigger melodic elements and added impact. Avi used Serum and saturation processing to make that moment feel like a massive wave slamming into the body, while darker melodies and a calmer flute-driven break add contrast before the track builds again. She wants listeners to feel pulled into a world where they are battling their own thoughts, facing darker moments and eventually making it through the waves.
That approach comes directly from 20 years of DJing, from small clubs and bars to festivals and arenas. Avi says she eventually realized she did not just want to find the perfect record for a moment, she wanted to make it. Years of reading crowds now influence her production, and regularly testing her own music in front of real audiences has become part of how she develops tracks. She carries the same mentality into her sets, adjusting in real time instead of playing the exact same show every night.
Her background also reaches well beyond dance music. Avi was heavily involved in the hip-hop scene and has played alongside Cardi B, Lil Wayne, Doja Cat, Lil Jon, Lil’ Kim, Public Enemy and Three 6 Mafia. Her biggest artistic influence, however, is Madonna, whose willingness to evolve, take risks and reinvent herself without losing her identity has strongly influenced Avi’s own mindset. She describes her sound in three words: inventive, fearless and heavy.

Playing Beyond Wonderland Chicago became another major moment, particularly because it meant performing on a major festival stage in her own city. Direct support sets for Calvin Harris, Major Lazer, Kaskade and Oliver Heldens also taught her how to build a room’s energy without giving everything away too early. Tomorrowland remains at the top of her festival wish list, drawn by both its scale and the immersive world surrounding the music.
Away from her own productions, Avi is constantly digging for music, sharing a weekly Instagram Top 5 and bringing many of those discoveries into her bi-weekly radio show, Late Checkout.
She has also been revisiting records from Hole and the Beastie Boys’ The Mix-Up. Her schedule remains equally active, with an upcoming show alongside Afrojack, recent appearances with Fedde Le Grand and Major Lazer, an ADE showcase, more original music coming and around five shows during a typical week.
One of the most surreal moments of her career happened from bed. Avi was watching the Coachella livestream when Fatboy Slim suddenly played one of her records, leaving her under the covers staring at her phone while thousands of people heard her music at the festival.
Moments like that sit naturally alongside the philosophy behind “Waves.” Because the track is self-released, Avi says she has been able to trust her instincts from start to finish. Her message is simple: “Expect the unexpected.” And the principle guiding everything remains the same: “Trust your instincts and keep evolving. Trends come and go, but I’d rather take chances and make something that feels like me than chase whatever sound is working at the moment.”
