From A Small Finnish Village To A Global Audience: The Story Behind Alex Stonebay

From discovering the piano at 13 to reaching listeners in more than 130 countries, Finnish electronic music producer Alex Stonebay is building an international career fueled by emotion, melody, and human connection.

A Musical Journey That Started In Karjalohja

Before his music reached listeners around the world, Alex Stonebay was a young boy growing up in Karjalohja, a small village in Finland.

Born Aleksi Kivilahti, the Finnish electronic music producer moved to Helsinki, the country's capital, at the age of 15. However, his musical journey had already begun two years earlier.

At 13, he started exploring different musical instruments. His first attempt was the cello, but it never quite felt right.

"I actually tried playing the cello first, but it just didn't click with me. Then I discovered the piano, and everything felt different. It immediately felt like the right instrument."

That connection became the foundation of his musical identity.

The piano remains Stonebay's primary instrument and continues to play a central role in his productions, where emotional melodies meet atmospheric synths, expressive vocals, and uplifting electronic arrangements.

The Avicii Moment That Changed Everything

Like many electronic music producers of his generation, Stonebay found inspiration in the artists who helped bring dance music to a global audience.

Avicii, Alesso, and Calvin Harris were among the names that encouraged him to explore electronic music production. But one particular track left a lasting impression.

"I remember hearing Avicii's 'Levels' for the first time. It was something magical to my ears. The melody, the energy, the feeling — it just made my whole body want to dance."

That experience helped shape his understanding of what electronic music could achieve: combining powerful emotions with the irresistible energy of dance music.

Stonebay began experimenting with FL Studio before eventually moving to Ableton Live, the software he uses today. Over time, he developed a sound that brings together his piano background, emotional pop songwriting, and modern melodic house production.

His goal is not simply to make people dance, but to create music that makes them feel something.

    Building An International Audience Independently

What started as a personal passion has gradually grown into an international artist project.

Today, Alex Stonebay's music reaches listeners in more than 130 countries each month, with millions of streams accumulated across his releases.

One of his independent releases, "Young, Wild and Free," has surpassed 500,000 streams on Spotify. His music has also found an audience on social media, where his tracks have been featured in tens of thousands of TikTok videos.

For Stonebay, however, the numbers only tell part of the story.

Behind every stream is a person, and behind every video is someone who has chosen to make his music part of their own experience. That connection with listeners has become an increasingly important part of his project.

The Story Behind The Red Hoodie

In an industry where visual identity can be just as recognizable as a musical signature, Stonebay has embraced something that has been part of his life since childhood: a red hoodie.

"I've been wearing red hoodies since I was a kid. When I started building my artist identity, it somehow felt like fate. It wasn't something completely new I had to invent — it was already part of who I was."

Today, the red hoodie has become a recognizable symbol of the Alex Stonebay project.

The color represents love, passion, energy, and connection — values reflected in his slogan:

    Wear Red. Spread Love.

His growing community of listeners and supporters is known as RED//FAMILY, while the phrase "That red hoodie sound" captures the emotional and melodic identity behind his music.

For Stonebay, the brand goes beyond clothing or visual aesthetics. It's about creating a sense of belonging through music and bringing people together around a shared feeling.

    More Than Familiar Melodies

Stonebay's catalog combines original electronic music with melodic house interpretations of familiar songs.

His versions of tracks such as "Another Love" and "Stay" bring recognizable melodies into a new electronic setting, blending emotional vocals with uplifting production.

While these interpretations introduce his music to new listeners, original releases remain an important part of his long-term artistic vision.

Rather than chasing every new trend in electronic music, Stonebay is focused on developing a recognizable sound built around melody, emotional storytelling, and the piano.

    New Collaborations And Bigger Ambitions

Looking ahead, Stonebay is entering an exciting new chapter.

He is currently working on new music and upcoming collaborations with other artists, with further announcements expected in the future.

Although he has already built an international audience independently, his ambitions extend beyond streaming platforms.

One of his biggest goals is to perform more frequently and eventually tour clubs and venues across Europe and beyond. He also hopes to find the right record label partner — one that shares his artistic vision and can help take the Alex Stonebay project to the next level.

"My biggest dream is to keep growing, perform more shows and find a great record label to build something meaningful with. But I also want to keep doing what I love, meeting new people, connecting with listeners and working with talented singers and artists."

For Stonebay, success isn't only about reaching bigger audiences. It's also about the experiences, relationships, and opportunities that music creates along the way.

    From Karjalohja To The World

The journey from a small Finnish village to an international electronic music audience has been shaped by curiosity, persistence, and a genuine love for music.

From discovering the piano at 13 to hearing Avicii's "Levels" for the first time, each experience has helped shape the artist Stonebay is becoming today.

And although his music now reaches listeners across more than 130 countries, his ambitions remain grounded in the same feeling that first inspired him to create music: the magic of a melody, the energy of a song that makes you dance, and the connection that music can create between people who have never met.
