After Three Years of Waiting, GRiZ Finally Drops "It's Called: Freefall" Remix
June 24, 2026 – Three years after unexpectedly debuting it at Bonnaroo as a tribute to genre-bending live sensations Rainbow Kitten Surprise, GRiZ has officially released his long-awaited remix of the band's beloved anthem, "It's Called: Freefall," out today via Atlantic Records.
The release culminates a uniquely full-circle story that began in 2023, when GRiZ stepped in to fill Rainbow Kitten Surprise's Bonnaroo performance slot and premiered an unreleased reimagining of one of the band's most beloved songs as a tribute. Over the following years, the remix quietly became a fan favorite across GRiZ's live sets, generating persistent calls for an official release.

That story came full circle earlier this month when Rainbow Kitten Surprise frontwoman Ela Melo joined GRiZ on stage at Bonnaroo for a surprise performance of the remix together, setting the stage for its official arrival.

Reimagining one of the defining alternative songs of the last decade through his signature lens of soulful funk, cinematic bass music, and emotional catharsis, the remix bridges two distinct musical worlds while preserving the heart of the original. Following a special live debut from GRiZ alongside Rainbow Kitten Surprise's Ela Melo at Bonnaroo, the release arrives as another bold step in GRiZ's ongoing evolution and further expands the sonic universe he has spent the past year building while reinforcing the track’s continued impact.
Originally released in 2018, "It's Called: Freefall" has become one of Rainbow Kitten Surprise's most enduring songs, earning Platinum certification and amassing over 700 million streams while developing a rare emotional connection with listeners across generations and genres.

Rather than reinventing the record entirely, GRiZ approaches the remix as a conversation with the original. Ela Melo's unmistakable vocal remains at the center of the experience as soaring melodies, expansive sound design, live instrumentation, and powerful bass-driven moments gradually transform the song into something simultaneously familiar and entirely new.
This comes amidst a string of singles from Rainbow Kitten Surprise, including most recent track, “Never Have I Ever,” which released last month. The band is currently on their massive bones World Tour, which continues with dates across North America including The Greek Theater in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh’s Stage AE, following successful runs across the UK, Ireland, and Australia. The tour is in support of their new album bones, which was released last year to critical praise from Billboard, Paste, Brooklyn Vegan, and more.
The release also arrives just weeks after GRiZ unveiled Future Funk Volume 1, his first full-length album since returning from hiatus and one of the most anticipated electronic releases of the year. Since reemerging in 2025, GRiZ has released more than 38 songs across originals, mixtapes, flips, and collaborations while rapidly reestablishing himself as one of electronic music's defining artists and live performers.
That momentum has included the launch of his sold-out Seven Stars Festival, major headline appearances at events including Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, and GRIZTRONICS at The Gorge, and collaborations spanning Wooli, Tape B, Gryffin, Levity, Big Gigantic, Flowdan, and more.
