Two Deaths Reported in EDC Las Vegas 2025 During Weekend

Tragedy struck EDC Las Vegas 2025 over the weekend, as two men lost their lives during the event’s final day, Sunday, May 18. The victims were Azmi Atassi, 33, of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Opkar Mahal, 39, of North Las Vegas. Both were reportedly either attending or planning to attend the festival, though official causes of death have not yet been released.

Opkar Mahal reportedly became ill while inside the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, home to EDC, and was transported to University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, according to Clark County officials.

Azmi Atassi was found unresponsive in his hotel room at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club. Authorities believe he was visiting the city with the intention of attending EDC.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated that both cases remain under review. No additional information has been disclosed as of Tuesday, and the department did not speculate on any connections between the incidents and the festival itself.

Despite these tragedies, officials confirmed that no major incidents or injuries were reported inside the festival grounds. Arrest statistics also remained relatively low compared to previous years, with 28 felony arrests and 17 misdemeanors reported in 2025 — a slight decrease from the previous year’s 29 felony and 5 misdemeanor arrests, according to KTNV Las Vegas.

Organized by Insomniac, EDC Las Vegas is the flagship of a global brand that also includes EDC Mexico, EDC Thailand, EDC Korea, and EDC Orlando. The event drew over 525,000 attendees in 2024, with similar figures expected in 2025. The festival is part of a larger week-long celebration, EDC Week, featuring dozens of satellite parties across major Las Vegas venues.

As fans around the world continue to celebrate the festival’s musical highlights, these two deaths serve as a somber reminder of the importance of safety and support within the rave and nightlife community. Our thoughts go out to the families and friends of those affected.
