SAVAS Pushes Dubstep Into New Territory on “Cowbell Crusader EP”

Most producers spend years trying to fit into an existing scene. SAVAS took the opposite approach. With “Cowbell Crusader EP,” he set out to create what he describes as cutting-edge music, combining as many subgenres of dubstep as possible with phonk influences to build something heavy, dark, epic, and completely his own. The mission was simple: take the festival power of dubstep and combine it with the viral energy of phonk while giving listeners something they genuinely haven't heard before.

Throughout the EP, influences from 90s Memphis rap, drift phonk, riddim, tearout, and traditional dubstep collide. Every track carries dark vocals, aggressive low-end energy, and heavy basslines while staying true to the gritty atmosphere that inspired the project. Tracks like “LAST MAN STANDING” fuse tearout bass design with phonk cowbells, while “SIGIL MAGICKA” blends riddim elements into the same formula. “Druida” takes things in a different direction through a Brazilian phonk fusion approach. According to SAVAS, this cowbell-infused bass design is something he rarely hears elsewhere in modern bass music and has become one of the defining characteristics of the EP.

The title itself reflects that mission. “Cowbell Crusader” isn't just the name of the EP, it's a statement of intent. Throughout the project, the iconic cowbell sound associated with phonk becomes a central character, fused directly into dubstep basses in ways rarely explored by other producers. Rather than treating the cowbell as a background element, SAVAS turns it into one of the foundations of his sound.

The project's identity extends beyond the music itself. Instead of following the traditional headbanger, wook, or modern dubstep aesthetic, SAVAS leaned into something more cinematic, heroic, and inspired by DOOM. That decision came naturally after years of hearing people outside electronic music tell him he should be creating video game soundtracks. Rather than ignoring those comments, he embraced them completely. He even developed and coded a playable video game around “LAST MAN STANDING,” expanding the EP into a larger creative universe.

Long before electronic music entered the picture, SAVAS was a heavy metal musician, playing guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Everything changed when a friend introduced him to “First Of The Year (Equinox)” by Skrillex in high school. The track immediately became one of the heaviest things he had ever heard and sparked an obsession with electronic music production. After experimenting with different software, he eventually found his creative home in Ableton Live, where years of trial and error helped him develop his own approach to sound design. To this day, Skrillex remains his biggest influence and the artist he credits for inspiring his entire journey into electronic music.

Some of the defining moments of his career came during the 2023 festival season. At Elements Music & Arts Festival, he met several of the artists who inspired him to make music in the first place, including Skrillex, Subtronics, and REZZ. For SAVAS, meeting Skrillex felt like a full-circle moment. Years earlier, hearing “First Of The Year (Equinox)” had pushed him toward electronic music. Now he was standing behind the stage watching the artist who inspired that journey before getting the chance to meet him in person.

Later that same summer, he opened for GRiZ at an official Electric Zoo afterparty following the festival's infamous Day One cancellation. Thousands of fans arrived carrying the frustration of a lost festival day and were desperate to finally hear music. Playing in front of roughly 3,000 people eager to release that energy became one of the most intense crowd experiences of his career. Being responsible for guiding that atmosphere left a lasting impression and helped define the type of performer he wants to become.

That live energy plays a major role in how he approaches DJing. Beyond interacting with the crowd and checking the vibe throughout a set, he believes audiences naturally mirror the performer's energy. If the DJ is dancing, moving, and fully invested in the moment, the crowd follows. That's why he spends so much time jumping around behind the decks, something he jokingly describes as the best cardio possible.

Outside music, SAVAS has a passion for linguistics and language. He speaks three languages fluently and enjoys learning different writing systems, including Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, and Korean alphabets. He also has a surprisingly peaceful favorite animal: the capybara. Despite making some of the darkest and heaviest music of his career, he loves capybaras because of how calm, friendly, and relaxed they are.

His playlists currently move between several worlds. Alongside releases from Skrillex, Space Laces, and artists from the Never Say Die catalog, he regularly listens to phonk artists like DVRST, Kordhell, and Raizhell for inspiration. Lately, he has also been diving into the fast-growing Hardtekk scene.

Looking ahead, a Cowbell Crusader Remixes EP, a new Favela Bass release, additional international performances, and a production tool currently in development are all on the horizon. While details remain under wraps, SAVAS believes the tool has already transformed his own workflow and could potentially change the way producers approach music creation in the future.

At the core of everything SAVAS creates is a simple philosophy: push boundaries. He has no interest in making average tracks or repeating ideas that already exist. Whether it's blending phonk cowbells with dubstep basses, creating video game worlds around releases, or experimenting with new genre combinations, the goal is always the same: make cutting-edge music and give listeners an experience they haven't heard before. More than anything, he hopes “Cowbell Crusader EP” makes people feel the same thing he feels when listening to it himself: powerful.
