Morgatron Turns Heaven, Hell and Personal Growth Into Bass-Heavy “Ascend”

Morgatron wanted “Ascend” to capture the feeling of breaking out of old constructs and entering a new way of thinking and existing. To translate that idea into music, he built the track around two opposing worlds: euphoric melodies and intense bass, or as he puts it, “heaven and hell, angels vs. demons.”

Released by EDMArmy Records on August 28, 2025, “Ascend” went through a handful of revisions before ultimately becoming a much more simplistic and straightforward song. That restraint ended up producing one of Morgatron’s favorite parts of the record. The chord progression in the breakdown is one of the simplest he has written, but also, in his words, one of the most satisfying.

The drops took a completely different approach. Morgatron recorded long stretches of basses, glitches and sound-design experiments before cutting those recordings into smaller pieces. He then treated the sounds almost like LEGO blocks, rearranging them until the individual elements became part of the finished drop.

That contrast between atmosphere and impact fits the way Morgatron currently describes his music in three words: captivating, cinematic and cyborg. Bass music remains firmly at the center of his identity too. As he puts it, “Bass music will reign supreme until the day I die!”

His relationship with electronic music started long before “Ascend.” Morgatron has been DJing for well over a decade, although production only became a serious focus in 2019. Artists including Skrillex, Kaskade, TJR, Virtual Riot, Zomboy and Barely Alive have all influenced him throughout that journey, while Barely Alive’s recent return to the brostep sound has been especially exciting for him.

One of his most important electronic music memories goes back to HARD Summer 2012. It was Morgatron’s first music festival, and watching Skrillex and Nero perform there “changed my life forever,” he says. That history is also why HARD Summer remains the festival he would choose to play if given the opportunity. For him, it would mean returning as an artist to the place where the festival experience started.

When Morgatron does step behind the decks, the connection comes through energy. He says he thrives on it and wants to be the most energetic person in the room, while constantly looking into the crowd and watching people feed off that intensity.

Not every performance goes according to plan, however. During a recent drum and bass event in San Diego, Morgatron experienced his first major corrupted USB problem. With much of the information he normally relied on suddenly unavailable, he had to make it through the set essentially “blindfolded.” His summary of the experience was simple: “That was fun.”

Live shows are now taking a temporary back seat. Morgatron is stepping away from performing for the foreseeable future so he can focus on building what he calls an “arsenal of music.” He currently plans to return to the decks in 2027.

Away from electronic music, basketball remains another major part of his life. Morgatron describes himself as highly athletic and played college basketball before eventually pursuing music school. Even after shifting his attention toward music, basketball remains his biggest passion outside the studio.

His expectations for “Ascend” are refreshingly uncomplicated. He does not need every listener to walk away with some enormous revelation. If there is even one moment in the track where someone thinks, “Wow, that was pretty cool,” he feels like he has done his job.

For listeners discovering Morgatron now, his message is simply to enjoy the music and stick around as he continues building the project. That process is guided by a philosophy centered on steady self-development: “Every day you either get a little bit better or a little bit worse. It’s all about self development and growth over time.”
