Ones To Watch: Ghastly Is Back - A New Chapter Built from The Ground Up

For years, Ghastly built his name as one of the most recognizable artists in bass house, known for explosive live sets, heavy edits, and a sound that helped push the genre into the mainstream festival world. But behind the touring, the streams, and the rapid rise of the project, a much different story was unfolding privately. Now, after a long period of reflection and rebuilding, Ghastly is entering an entirely new chapter, one shaped by discipline, clarity, family, and a completely different mindset.

Long before the festivals and the international recognition, David Crow was growing up on a goat farm in Buckeye, Arizona, surrounded by hundreds of animals and far removed from any major music scene. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles with no financial support, chasing a career in music while living out of a van, showering in public restrooms, and sleeping on beaches while trying to survive. Before the world knew the name Ghastly, the project was built through years of uncertainty, sacrifice, and persistence.

Everything started shifting after a chance connection with Mija led to the creation of “Crank It.” The track eventually reached Skrillex, opening the door to releases on OWSLA. From there, Ghastly quickly became one of the defining names in bass house, building a global audience and surpassing 100 million streams across platforms.

But as the project grew larger, the focus that originally built it slowly started fading. Ghastly has openly explained that his attention became spread across things outside of music, from content creation to distractions that pulled him away from the studio and the mindset that originally fueled his creativity. The hunger that built the project started disappearing, the music slowed down, and the direction behind Ghastly became less clear.

Over the past year, Ghastly stepped away from nearly everything that was dividing his focus. He cut out social media, stopped partying entirely, removed distractions, and focused almost exclusively on music, health, and family. What looked publicly like silence was actually a complete reset happening privately behind the scenes. According to Ghastly himself, one of the biggest shifts in his life came through becoming a father.

“Fatherhood has not only played a role in the progression of my music but has also dramatically altered my entire value system. The hours I spend in the studio are no longer just about self-expression; they are an investment in the world my son will inherit. I find myself filtering every lyric and melody through a new lens, asking if this is a message I’d be proud for him to hear. My ambition hasn't shrunk, but it has matured. I am no longer chasing the temporary high of applause but the permanence of a legacy.”

That clarity eventually led to one of the biggest decisions of his career. Moving forward, Ghastly and GHENGAR will continue as completely separate projects with different creative directions. Ghastly will focus on 4x4 and experimental bass, while GHENGAR will remain centered around heavy dubstep and live vocals. No overlap. Two entirely separate lanes.

The first real glimpse into this new era arrived through “DOPAMINE MACHINE VOL. 1,” a 30-minute mix packed with unreleased IDs, edits, and visuals created during this rebuilding period. More than just another mix, the project feels like the result of an artist fully reconnecting with his purpose after stepping away from distractions and rebuilding his foundation from scratch.

At the end of the mix, Ghastly leaves fans with a message that perfectly summarizes where he is mentally and creatively right now: what once felt like being buried was actually being planted. After everything he went through personally and professionally, the message is simple:

“No matter what part of your life you are in, the beginning is near.”

This comeback is not about recreating the past or revisiting an older version of Ghastly. It is a more intentional and focused version of the project, built through clarity, discipline, and a completely new perspective on life, music, and legacy. And according to Ghastly himself, this is only the beginning.
