Fatboy Slim Reflects on 20 Years Without an Album and a Shift in Passion

Fatboy Slim, the legendary UK DJ and producer, has captivated audiences for nearly three decades with electrifying live performances. However, in a recent interview with The Sun, Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim’s real name) shared candid reflections on his evolving creative journey, revealing why a new album may never materialize.

“The thing is, you can’t make music unless you’re absolutely passionate about it and it drives you from the moment you wake up in the morning,” Cook said during the conversation, which coincided with his performance in Somerset. “I just don’t seem to feel like that anymore. I feel like that about DJing and about putting on things like this, but I’ve kind of lost my passion for making music.”

Fatboy Slim’s last studio album, Palookaville, was released in 2004. Despite the absence of full-length projects, he has continued to deliver standout singles, such as “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat” in 2013 and “Where U Iz” in 2017. Earlier in 2024, he released two tracks inspired by his live sets: “Role Model”, featuring Dan Diamond, and “Bus Stop Please”, with Daniel Steinberg.

“These last two singles came out of live shows,” Cook explained. “They were both things that I made just to play on the side. I had tunes that nobody else had in my set. And that kind of caught on with people when we worked out that we could clear the samples and release them.”

Last year, Cook also unveiled an EP titled Best Of Remixes, which included a reimagined version of “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat” by Bruno Martini. While fans may not see another studio album, Cook’s passion for DJing and connecting with live audiences remains stronger than ever.

For now, the world will continue to revel in Fatboy Slim’s iconic contributions to electronic music, both old and new, through his legendary performances and the occasional single or remix.
