Vinyl, CDs Cassettes Stay Tariff-Free in the US — But Expect Shipping Delays

Good news for collectors: vinyl, CDs, and cassettes remain exempt from US tariffs under the latest presidential order. Beginning August 29th, new tariff rules mean most imported goods valued under $800 will no longer be duty-free, but “informational media” — including recorded music — is safe from extra import fees.

Platforms like Bandcamp and Discogs have confirmed the exemption but are warning fans and sellers to brace for possible shipping delays and errors as customs and carriers adjust to the new rules. They caution that increased border checks may slow delivery times and that some carriers have already added new fees, creating uncertainty for anyone shipping to the US.

Music-related merchandise — like tote bags, apparel, and other “soft goods” — will still be subject to import duties. Bandcamp has encouraged artists to adjust their shipping prices to include these fees and to choose Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) options to prevent buyers from facing surprise charges upon delivery.

With several carriers temporarily changing or suspending US shipping options, fans and sellers should prepare for possible delays — but the good news is that records, CDs, and tapes will continue to cross the border without additional tariffs.
