SPOTIFY IS CRACKING DOWN ON FAMILY PLANS SHARED AMONG FRIENDS

Spotify is tightening its Premium Family plan rules with QR code verification, making it harder for friends living at different addresses to share a subscription. Members who receive a verification request have just seven days to complete it.

According to Spotify's official support page, some Family plan members may be required to scan a QR code displayed on the plan manager's phone. Both users must be physically present in the same location, and the code changes every few seconds to make remote verification more difficult.

Failing to complete verification within seven days could have serious consequences. Members can lose access to their Family subscription and be prevented from joining a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months.

Spotify has always required Family plan members to live at the same address. The new verification system reinforces that existing policy, potentially affecting friends who split subscription costs despite living in separate households.

While not every subscriber will necessarily face these checks, the move signals stricter enforcement of Spotify's account-sharing rules.

Would you still pay for Spotify Premium if you couldn't share a Family plan with friends?
