Nicole Kidman Dives Into Rave Culture in A24 s New Thriller Babygirl
Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman takes on a surprising new role in A24’s erotic thriller Babygirl, where underground rave culture becomes a central backdrop. The movie, which premiered in the US and arrives in UK cinemas on January 10, features scenes filmed at BASEMENT, a famed industrial techno venue located in Brooklyn, New York.
In Babygirl, Kidman’s character, Romy, explores the pulsating, strobe-lit rooms of BASEMENT while searching for her lover, Samuel (played by Harris Dickinson). The intense rave sequence is soundtracked by Yellow Claw, Natte Visstick, and RHYME’s track CRUSH, setting the mood for the pair’s on-screen connection.

The club, housed within the Knockdown Center, has been a hub for New York’s underground techno scene since its opening in 2019. Designed to emulate an “industrial catacomb,” BASEMENT’s gritty, atmospheric vibe perfectly matches the dark allure of Babygirl.
In a behind-the-scenes featurette, Kidman shared her experience filming the rave scene: “I loved it, it was so freeing… I want to go back to that rave now.” Her enthusiasm adds authenticity to the movie’s portrayal of rave culture, blending cinematic storytelling with the raw energy of underground dance music.
This isn’t the first time a film has tapped into the unique aesthetic of techno clubs. In 2022, The Batman transformed London’s Printworks into The Iceberg Lounge, highlighting the visual appeal and cultural significance of these venues. Similarly, Babygirl leverages BASEMENT’s industrial charm to immerse viewers in its gripping narrative.
Kidman’s role in Babygirl isn’t just a departure from her usual repertoire, it also reveals a personal connection to the underground. At the 2024 GQ Men of the Year event, she admitted, “I’m a small party person, but I do like a rave.” This unexpected statement underscores her versatility and openness to exploring subcultures in both her personal life and professional roles.
As Babygirl gains traction among audiences, BASEMENT’s appearance cements its status as more than a venue, it’s a character in itself, offering a unique authenticity to the film’s intense, seductive energy.
