New Illinois Law Targets Ticket Bots, Hidden Fees, and Ghost Tickets

Buying tickets for concerts, festivals, and sporting events in Illinois is about to become much more transparent. Governor JB Pritzker has signed a new package of consumer protection laws aimed at eliminating some of the biggest frustrations fans face when purchasing tickets. The legislation targets hidden mandatory fees, speculative "ghost ticket" sales, deceptive resale practices, and the use of automated bots that purchase large quantities of tickets before fans have a chance.

One of the biggest changes requires businesses to clearly display mandatory fees upfront, allowing consumers to see a more accurate price before reaching checkout. The new laws also ban speculative ticketing, a controversial practice where resellers advertise tickets they don't actually own. By requiring sellers to possess tickets before listing them, Illinois hopes to reduce scams, canceled orders, and inflated resale prices that have become increasingly common during high-demand onsales.

Announcing the legislation, Governor JB Pritzker said Illinois is "saying goodbye to junk fees once and for all" , adding that the new laws are designed to address abuses in the ticketing marketplace while strengthening consumer protections. The package also increases enforcement against ticket-buying bots, which have long been blamed for making it harder for genuine fans to purchase tickets at face value before they appear on resale platforms.

The legislation has also earned praise from Live Nation, which welcomed the state's decision to ban speculative ticket sales and deceptive resale websites. "We applaud Illinois lawmakers for standing for fans and artists by passing a ban on speculative tickets and deceptive websites" the company said in a statement. "No one should be able to scam fans by listing tickets they don't have or pretending to be legitimate ticket sellers."
