Doc Du Funk: The Doctor is Back in the Studio to Showcase The Power of the Beat

Uriel Montoya, better known as Doc Du Funk, brings his distinctive Latin-infused tech house sound to Grooveism with his latest release ‘The Power of the Beat’. The Mexican producer’s journey from childhood DJ to Doctor and back to the studio creates a unique perspective that permeates his music.

Starting his musical journey at age eleven in Aguascalientes, Mexico, Montoya’s early exposure to ’70s and ’80s dance music shaped his sonic foundation. After a stint as a rock vocalist in the late ’90s, he temporarily stepped away from music to pursue medicine—hence the “Doc” in his artist name. Now based in León, Guanajuato, he has returned to electronic music with renewed vigor and clinical precision.

‘The Power of the Beat’ delivers an incendiary blend of aggressive tech house rhythms layered with percussive Latin elements, where granular synthesis creates ethereal textures that dissolve into driving, danceable energy.

Montoya’s meticulous approach reveals his methodical nature: “First of all I always try to find a punchy beat drum, since dance music and tech house music it’s aggressive. Then look for drums, the most important part of this for me are the percs, they need to be very groovy with a Latin touch.” He emphasizes layering techniques, explaining how he modifies loop toppers “till I get the feeling and sound I am looking for,” while crafting powerful baselines that complement punchy kick drums.

His production philosophy extends to creating organic textures: “About the drum fills I like them to sound like if I have a real drummer playing the song, in order to get a less robotic sound.” For “The Power of the Beat,” he employed granular echo synthesizers on the breakdown to achieve “that nice and weird effect,” demonstrating his commitment to innovative sound design.

Doc Du Funk’s release comes as the LA-based Grooveism label prepares for upcoming VOLAC events in true ‘Rinse & Repeat’ form on October 11th and 12th. The label has gained significant momentum following recent shows headlined by Curbi and Erotikk, establishing Groove-ism as a platform where emerging artists like Doc Du Funk can showcase their distinctive sound alongside established names.
