Diplo Fined €300,000 for Unauthorized Party in Protected Ibiza Nature Reserve

In June 2024, the globally recognized American DJ Diplo, whose real name is Thomas Wesley Pentz, held an unauthorized party at Cala d’Hort, a scenic and environmentally protected viewpoint in Ibiza. The spontaneous event drew a sizable crowd and was widely promoted through Diplo’s personal social media channels. Those posts, later deleted, became key evidence in the investigation conducted by local authorities.

Cala d’Hort, facing the iconic islet of Es Vedrà, is part of several overlapping conservation designations: it falls within the Natura 2000 ecological network, is classified as an Área Natural de Especial Interés (ANEI), and holds multiple EU protections including status as a Special Conservation Area and a Special Protection Area for Birds. The area is home to delicate ecosystems and species such as the critically endangered Balearic shearwater, which is highly sensitive to human disturbance, particularly noise and litter. Environmentalists and local officials expressed concern over the potential harm caused by the unauthorized gathering, which took place without permits, crowd control measures, or environmental safeguards.

Following public outcry, the Sant Josep City Council initiated an investigation in coordination with local police and environmental agencies. Authorities reviewed photos, videos, and drone footage published online. Officials concluded that the event was deliberately organized for promotional purposes and conducted in full awareness of the restrictions in place. The municipality labeled the act “a serious breach of environmental and administrative law” and described Diplo’s actions as “highly irresponsible.”

In late June 2025, the Sant Josep council imposed a €300,000 fine on Diplo, citing the gravity of the violation and the ecological vulnerability of the area. According to local legislation, infractions involving damage or risk to protected environments can result in fines of up to €450,000. This particular case, officials noted, was “among the most severe violations in recent memory,” and the penalty reflects that.

The incident has reignited discussions around celebrity tourism, environmental responsibility, and the limits of influencer behavior in ecologically sensitive areas. Ibiza, long grappling with the impact of mass tourism, has recently tightened controls on unlicensed events and party-related disturbances. Local authorities emphasized that regardless of fame or global reach, the island’s environmental laws apply equally to all visitors.
