Connecting through music: Vinylly, the new dating app

A brand new dating app, Vinylly, is now a competitor to popular apps such as Tinder and Bumble. It matches its users based on musical compatibility. It is said to be the first and largest dating app that relies solely on music compatibility.

In 2022, Vinylly had over 18,700 matches and more than 40,000 profile views. The app works by analyzing users’ streaming habits and asking questions about their preferences.

Vinylly founder, Rachel Van Nortwick, recently shared some statistics from the app’s growth on Twitter. She revealed that the app was recognized by Mashable as one of “8 dating apps that are bucking against Tinder’s model.”

“I have been working hard on Vinylly, the inclusive dating app focused on music compatibility,” Van Nortwick explained. “I thought I’d share what we’ve been up to because we are shaking up the dancefloor.”

Vinylly, the app, provides its users with the ability to create and share playlists, with more than 21,000 playlists being viewed in 2022. Additionally, users can link their Spotify accounts and communicate with each other by using music-related conversation starters.

“We launched our own proprietary profile generator, giving all music fans the ability to create a profile in minutes. Users can still sync their Spotify too,” added the founder. “Vinylly’s mission is backed by science. Connecting through music increases dopamine, oxytocin and lowers cortisol.”

Vinylly’s recent blog post featured cognitive psychologist Dr. Daniel Levitin, who discussed the scientific basis for music compatibility, affirming that “listening to music changes your brain chemistry”. He added: “we know that people use music the way they use drugs.”

The post went on to add: “Vinylly’s algorithm allows you to match with people who have some similarities in music interests – just enough for you to find something in common, while also growing and expanding your music library.”
