Apple Music Launches Playlist Import Tool Amid Spotify Backlash

Apple Music has officially launched a new tool that allows users to import playlists from other streaming platforms, including Spotify. After initial beta testing in Australia and New Zealand, the feature is now rolling out to major markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, and Mexico.

Users can find the function under Music Settings, where a new option titled “Transfer Music from Other Services” appears. By signing into their existing streaming platform accounts, listeners can easily select and import playlists directly into Apple Music — a long-requested feature now becoming reality.

 

The timing of the rollout is notable, arriving as Spotify faces mounting criticism. Numerous musicians and independent labels have pulled their catalogs from the platform in protest against CEO Daniel Ek’s investments through his venture fund Prima Materia into Helsing, a defense company specializing in AI-powered military technologies.

Among those leaving Spotify are experimental acts like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Xiu Xiu, and electronic label Kalahari Oyster Cult. Critics point out that Spotify has also faced backlash for low royalty payouts, controversial donations — including $150,000 to Trump’s inauguration — and last year’s move to demonetize tracks with under 1,000 streams.

As Apple Music strengthens its ecosystem with user-friendly features and Spotify faces a wave of controversy, the competitive landscape of streaming continues to evolve. For many fans and artists, this new tool could make the switch away from Spotify easier than ever.
