39-Year-Old Woman Dies on First Day of Burning Man 2024: Investigation Underway

A tragic incident marked the opening day of Burning Man 2024 as Kendra Frazer, a 39-year-old woman, was found unresponsive at the festival on the morning of August 25. Emergency services received a report at 11:29 AM, and despite their efforts, Frazer was pronounced dead at 11:37 AM.

In a statement, the Burning Man Project expressed their condolences: “It is with heavy hearts that Burning Man Project confirms the death of a participant in Black Rock City, located in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this loss. We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate this incident.” The festival also provided information on local counseling services for those in need.

Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen confirmed that this is the first reported death on the playa this year.

This incident is not the first of its kind in the festival’s history. At least seven other deaths have been linked to Burning Man, including an incident last year where a man died after receiving CPR. While drug intoxication was suspected, severe weather conditions such as heavy rain and “mud baths” complicated the emergency response.

Burning Man 2024 is expected to continue until September 2, drawing around 70,000 attendees to the temporary community of Black Rock City. The annual festival is renowned for its celebration of music, art, and community, culminating in the burning of a large wooden effigy, known as the Man, which symbolizes the spirit of the event.

As authorities continue their investigation, the Burning Man community mourns the loss of one of their own, reflecting on the importance of safety and support within the vibrant, temporary city they create each year.
