27-Year-Old Costa Rican Dies After Medical Emergency at EDC Colombia
A 27-year-old Costa Rican man has died following a medical emergency during the opening night of Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) Colombia in Medellín. The incident occurred on Saturday, October 10, at the Atanasio Girardot sports complex, where thousands of electronic music fans had gathered for the festival's first-ever edition in the country.

The attendee was identified as Ismael Gerardo Méndez Huertas, who was reportedly found unconscious and experiencing serious breathing difficulties during the event. Emergency responders at the festival provided initial assistance before transporting him by ambulance to Pablo Tobón Uribe Hospital in Medellín, where he was admitted in critical condition.

According to medical information reported by local media, Méndez Huertas arrived at the hospital at approximately 11:30 p.m. with prolonged seizure activity and symptoms suggesting possible intoxication. He subsequently suffered a cardiac arrest, prompting medical staff to perform emergency resuscitation. Despite efforts to stabilize his condition, he experienced further complications and was pronounced dead at approximately 12:08 a.m. on Sunday, October 11.
Initial reports raised concerns about a possible drug overdose. However, the official cause of death has not been confirmed, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Forensic examinations are expected to help determine what led to the medical emergency, and no specific substance has been officially identified as contributing to his death.
The tragedy comes during a significant weekend for Colombia's electronic music scene, as EDC makes its debut in Medellín on October 10–11. The two-day festival brings together international electronic music artists, large-scale stage productions, and thousands of attendees for one of the country's most anticipated dance music events. The incident has cast a shadow over what was intended to be a celebration of music and community.
As authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding his death, our thoughts are with Méndez Huertas' family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
