Netherlands Leads Europe In MDMA Use Among Young Adults, New Data Shows

New data from the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) highlights major differences in MDMA use among young adults across Europe, with the Netherlands recording the highest rate. The latest available national surveys show 10.2% of young Dutch adults reporting MDMA use within the previous year, followed by Czechia at 6.6%.

Estonia and France follow at 4.4% and 3.8%, while Norway, Bulgaria, Finland and Germany also appear among the countries with comparatively higher rates. The figures cover young adults aged 15–34, although the exact age ranges vary slightly for some countries. Importantly, the data comes from each country's most recent available survey, meaning survey years are not identical across the ranking.

Across the European Union, the EUDA estimates that around 2.4 million people aged 15–34 used MDMA during the past year, representing 2.4% of that age group. Among those aged 15–24, approximately one million people reported past-year use.

The 2026 European Drug Report also notes MDMA's continued connection to nightlife and entertainment settings. While overall annual consumption appears relatively stable, the agency says more recent wastewater data suggests use may be declining in some areas, adding another layer to how the survey figures should be interpreted.
