Ireland Makes Basic Income for Artists Permanent in 2026

The Irish government has confirmed that the pilot “Basic Income for the Arts” scheme will move into a permanent phase under the 2026 budget, extending support to thousands of creative workers and signalling a long-term shift in how the arts are funded.

Originally launched in 2022 as a three-year pilot providing weekly payments of approximately €325 (around US $370) to 2,000 artists and creatives, the programme has already shown strong results in terms of mental wellbeing, creative output and retention of talent in the sector.

Culture Minister Patrick O’Donovan described the initiative as “the envy of the world” and stressed the importance of making it “future-proof and sustainable.”

Eligible artists will be able to apply for the permanent scheme from September 2026, with broader eligibility across artistic disciplines announced.

The decision positions Ireland among global leaders in creative sector support, moving beyond traditional grants to a model that recognises artists with steady income and greater freedom to focus on their craft.
